Gyanesh Kumar Resigns Kharge
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday leveled serious allegations on the Election Commission and the Modi government at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting. Kharge said the responsibility of protecting the country’s democracy and constitution was once again on the shoulders of the Congress. He alleged that the Modi government has planned to hollow the strong democratic foundation of the country in the last 12 years.
Kharge alleged that under Sajish, people’s names were being removed from the voter list and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) had become a ‘puppet’ of the Modi government. He said that safeguarding the vote of every eligible citizen and ensuring fair counting of every vote is the basic spirit of democracy.
The Congress president claimed that two commissioners of the Election Commission itself have described the CEC’s activities as ‘arbitrary and improper’. Kharge alleged that the CEC’s efforts were benefiting the ruling party. He demanded the immediate removal of the Chief Election Commissioner. He also demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation ‘on the basis of morality’
‘Illegal Change in Rules of Form-6’
Kharge also raised the issue of youth suffrage. He said that in December 1988, then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi reduced the voting age from 21 to 18 years. On the contrary, he alleged that PM Modi had quietly changed the rules of Form-6 under the guise of disenfranchising the youth, which according to him was completely illegal. ‘They don’t want to give you jobs, they don’t want to give you the right to vote now,’ he said. Kharge said that the right to vote is not the fate of anyone, but millions of people have sacrificed for it.
Congratulations to Rahul Gandhi
Kharge also mentioned the questions raised by Rahul Gandhi regarding the voter list. He said that Rahul Gandhi had raised serious questions on the basis of voter figures in the cases of Mahadevpura, Aland, Haryana and Maharashtra. He had raised issues of duplicate voters, doubtful addresses, voters in large number on the same address and joint entries from Form-6. Kharge claimed that if the Election Commission showed seriousness on these issues, its credibility would not be questioned today.
5 questions and demands of Congress from Election Commission Kharge questioned who took the SIR verdict and why two election commissioners were kept out of the internal portal. He also made five demands of the Congress. 1. Full data of major changes in the electoral roll should be made public 2. Removed voters should be notified and have a chance to appeal. 3. Provide timely election data to political parties in simple format. 4. Independent and timely investigation of serious irregularities 5. Ensure transparency in important data and rulings related to the electoral process.
Kharge said the Congress does not see the issue as just an electoral lose-lose fight. He said that elections and government remain ethnic, but democracy and the constitution are permanent.
He targeted the Modi government and compared the currency ban to the so-called ‘vote ban’ Kharge said that in currency ban, the poor stood in line, while in ‘votbandi’, the poor are being pushed out of line.
The Congress president said that with five state elections ahead, it is important to ensure that no voter’s rights are violated. He called on the party to fight the issue ‘from streets to parliament’.Rahul Gandhi surrounds Election Commission, raises questions
